Surf Paradise
Interior Architecture | France
This property in the south west of France is located on one of the best surf spots in Europe and this mecca attracts a crowd of down to earth sporty happy people. Its unpretentious laid back lifestyle is exuded through the house, although every effort was made to create a luxurious beach abode, the vibe is a ‘’no shoes, feet in sand’’ freedom from convention.
INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
Defining the Brief
Our clients wanted to build from scratch a beach bungalow with four ensuite bedrooms and generous living, dining and kitchen spaces. The house also includes a garage, laundry, storage areas and decking for bikes and surf boards. We consulted books and floorplans of bungalow design, especially colonial architecture and Caribbean property design to gain ideas and inspiration both for the style of the veranda, the shutters, balconies and colour schemes. The building sits on a sloping plot which provides natural daylight to the lower ground floor.
Space Planning
The goal was to design the floorplan in an arrangement that would allow ten guests easy independent circulation around the house and all of the bedrooms. Each suite should have their own exterior terrace with easy access to the garden, pool and beach. Each bedroom and bathroom is furnished with bespoke fitted wardrobes and spacious vanity units which offer ample storage space so guests can comfortably unpack and unwind in clutter free rooms. Each bedroom has a desk space so guests can retire to the rooms and work or relax away from the hubbub of the entertainment areas.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Material Selection
The theme colour of the property is the ‘Eating Room Red’ paint of the exterior shutters. Shades of red are a recurring element throughout the house in fabrics, art and accessories. The bedrooms are each styled in soft pastel colours which lend a beachy Caribbean vibe with plenty of exotic hints in the textures and motifs of shells, palms, flags and surfers.
The materials chosen include rattan furniture, shutter doors, linen curtains and a lot of wood cladding. The floors and all the bathroom vanity surfaces are polished concrete and most of the walls are clad half way with painted tongue and groove panelling
INTERIOR STYLING
Furniture Sourcing
The style of the guest house is an exotic relaxed beach vibe which is colourful but not a seaside pastiche. We crafted a house which feels like visiting an old friend home with many layers of colour, texture and displays of art, vintage artifacts and classic furniture mixed with modern and mid-century pieces. Lighting always plays an important role in our designs and so we mixed pendants, downlight spots with floor uplights, wall lights with table and floor lamps and a fireplace which allows to set the scene for cozy evenings.
