Miami White

Interior Design| London

One room at a time

A young family of five hired us to renovate their house without moving; undoubtedly one of the most logistically challenging projects we have managed to date. Rewiring, replumbing, replacing doors,  windows and flooring as well as the entire staircase from the basement to the top floor. We scheduled renovations around their holidays and the family lived with a team of builders for extended periods, everyone pulled together and with an enormous amount of goodwill and cooperation by everyone involved the home is now fit for their dream life.

Defining the Brief

Our client told us she only likes black and white, silver, lavender and lime green, a color palette which we dubbed Miami White and have come to adore. We started by renovating one room at a time but eventually covered everything from the basement to the top floor master suite. We designed new joinery for all the bedrooms and created an entire family entertainment zone with a mini gym, bar and pool table in the lower ground. We replaced flooring throughout the house, designed and fitted a new entrance door and replaced all room doors, replaced several bathrooms and finished off the project by replacing all the staircases.

Children’s bedrooms

We often find ourselves involved when families transition children into new bedrooms. This was the case for the oldest boy. Dad’s office made way for a new bedroom which would have to grow with him through teenage years. Having three daughters myself I have been through this process and can relate and recommend tips and strategies how to design bedrooms as children grow older and how to respond and prepare for their changing needs. As part of the bedrooms renovations we designed and fitted wall to wall wardrobes with sliding doors, which feature large mirrors, integrated lighting, shelving and hanging and drawers with plenty of storage to accommodate growing clothes sizes!

INTERIOR STYLING

Office Design

An unappealing front room was a dumping ground for prams, jackets and amazon deliveries. We had to work hard to convince our client of using a fun metallic wallpaper which was a great success once installed as it greets you when you enter the house. This office is now a welcome workstation as the children need extra bedrooms. The vitsoe shelving is one of our favorite sustainable choices of furniture as it can be reconfigured and used in other rooms in the future.

INTERIOR DESIGN

That room downstairs

The lower ground floor was a hodge podge of walls and varying ceiling heights and therefore ended up as an unloved and unused space with great potential. Everyone contributed ideas to how it should be utilized and we set about designing a multi purpose family room which would be enjoyed by young ones and grown ups alike. We injected the space with dark glamour by cladding one wall and the double doors with a liquid metal design and levelled the ceiling and painted it black. We installed floor to ceiling mirrors and fitted joinery to hide nooks and straighten the space which now houses a bar area. One end of the floor is a dedicated cinema space with a drop down screen and a curtain which shields a treadmill from where to  look out over the garden, the other end is dedicated to the bar and pool table. The supporting beams which had to remain were clad and enlarged so they now function as a room divider and house a pool cue store on one side and a dramatically lit display of musical instruments on the opposite side; the first feature you see when you enter the space.

Bespoke Joinery

A room with a view

The master bedroom suite occupies the entire top floor of the house and has beautiful views over the garden and beyond. The sloping roof structure and its beams with many different levels and nooks made the space look cramped and messy. We stripped out the entire top floor and started from scratch, levelled walls and slopes to achieve cleaner lines. We improved the layout of the wardrobes to accommodate more drawers and more hanging rails. We fitted large mirrors to increase reflection. We designed and fitted a vanity table with sockets for hairdryers. The master headboard is fitted into the wall with recessed bedside tables, shelving, lighting and sockets. The desk under the front window is just wide enough to accommodate a large screen and at the top of the house offers a quiet space to work from home.  The bespoke leather ottoman bench flips open to reveal extra shoe storage.

Bathroom glamour

The original arrangement offered little storage for products and the layout was unpractical. One particular request was to build a tall niche in the shower for large bottles! We worked through various revisions on 3D to define the best possible configuration which is particularly challenging when dealing with sloping roofs and the contractor worked miracles with hitherto deemed ‘impossible’ replumbing. The selection of bright marble porcelain tiles and addition of various placements of LED lighting under the units and in the recesses makes the space brighter and appear more spacious with no change in footprint.
