Coastal Serenity
Coastal homes are shaped, above all else, by light — and light on the coast is never generic. Long sand dunes of the Atlantic, green shores of the Pacific, rocky beaches of Scandinavia, shallow turquoise coves of the Mediterranean — each throws its own light, and a palette that settles beautifully in the South-of-France can turn cold against Northern light.
Yet, it is never only the light we consider. It is the colour of the water, the topography and vegetation of the land, the silver of an olive grove or the grey-green of dune grass and pine — all of it deciding how a colour will resonate in that particular place. We read the atmosphere of a coastline before choosing a single colour: which way the rooms face, how the light arrives in the morning and leaves in the evening, what the sea throws back. The materials, the openings, the relationship between inside and outside all respond to the specific quality of light in that particular place.
The conditions that come with living beside water are not inconveniences to design around. Salt air, sand and mud, life always ebbs and flows between indoors and out regardless of weather or season — these are the permanent facts of coastal life, and they decide what lasts. We specify for them rather than against them: oak bleached and white-oiled to carry bright coastal light without glare, timber stained dark where a room wants the warmth of somewhere more distant, bleached woods and vintage rattan set against hardwood for the soft, unforced ease the coast invites. Stone and timber chosen because salt, sand and bare feet improve them rather than wear them out. A home that acknowledges these conditions honestly will always feel more settled than one that simply looks the part in summer.
What we design for, in this world, is a particular quality of ease. Spaces that feel unhurried. Rooms that hold light rather than resist it. Interiors that open to the landscape without losing their sense of being somewhere considered — homes for barefoot living that are no less precise for it.
