Alpine Craft

Mountain homes are built for more than one season, and the best of them feel equally right across all of them. The slopes are white in February and green in July; the light that reflects off fresh snow is not the light of a high-summer afternoon, and a home that ignores the difference has been designed for a mood, not a life.

What carries a chalet across the year is decided early. Materials that read as warm under winter light and cool under summer sun. A hearth that draws the room together in January and sits quietly in August. Floors at the threshold that take meltwater and boot-grit through the winter and pollen and dust through the summer without ever looking the worse for it. Even the terrace is two rooms in one — a place for a hot tub steaming against the snow and a fire pit caught in the low afternoon sun, and then, months later, the shaded spot where everyone gathers for lunch as the high sun moves overhead. The furniture and the textiles out there have to survive being buried in February and bleached by an alpine July, which is not what most outdoor pieces are made for. The honesty of the material, the care of the craft, the relationship between the interior and the landscape — these are what remain constant while everything around them changes.

Stone, timber, wool and plaster are not decorative decisions in the mountains. They are the natural response to place — materials drawn from the same landscape the house sits in, that settle into their surroundings over time rather than asserting themselves against them. They are also the materials that age honestly at altitude, where the swing from heated winter interiors to open-windowed summers is hard on anything that wasn't chosen for it. Stone that was quarried locally, timber that moves and patinates rather than cracking, wool that holds the warmth of a winter room in a way no synthetic manages, plaster that breathes with the shifting humidity of the seasons — these earn their place over years, not on the day they're installed.
